We will no longer be using tennis balls, Thanks for telling us.
Wow! That’s something I didn’t know, thanks so much for sharing. My puppy loves playing ball and a while ago she totally destroyed a tennis ball, first tearing off the outer covering. Eventually it split in two and she still kept playing with it. Oops! That could have have detremental effects. Will never get another tennis ball but will find something suitable next week when I am in town. Or look at what Kong has to offer. Thanks for that valuable information.
I think all of us are guilty of using tennis balls at some stage
Kong rubber balls are SUPER HEAVY. Lacrosse ball heavy. Ever get konked with one? Unpleasant. Don’t get m wrong, I’m a big Kong fan, except for the stuffed animal junk – it’s made in China, unlike the the rubber toys made in Colorado. I will not give my dog anything ever from China. But those super hard solid rubber balls that are seriously heavy are not a good choice for my American Bulldog/Boxer mix. Folks really need to be responsible and decide for themselves. Rubber is good, yes. Solid rubber? Not for us. Kongs DO NOT LAST INDEFINITELY, so frequent inspection and washing is necessary to avoid choking hazard. Weather deteriorates natural rubber – bring toys inside.
An alert: Hope Depot and it’s ilk are selling Cocoa Mulch that is seriously TOXIC to dogs. No warning labels. Smells delicious, causes death.
Thanks for the warnings Debora
thank you for your info. you should also be aware of a ball called the PIMPLE BALL, this ball has been known to suck the dogs tongue in a whole at the end of the ball, the dog or owner cant get there tongue out because of sever swelling, and can cause sever damage and some cases amputation of dogs tonngue, one woman has to hand feed her dog, and it takes her several hours a day to do this, plus thousands of dollars in vet. bills, her poor dog luckly survived this, yet never will be the same.
thanks for the warning valerie
My 65 kilo rottweiler says for me to thank you for his brank new black Kong….I thank you too, Andrew!!
Sharon from Ontario
You’re both welcome
Thanks for this info. I have two labs, who love tennis balls. NO MORE!! I’m going to get solid rubber balls from now on. Very good to know.
thanks so much for the info. Never again. I have two that love to play ball.
Really good information regarding playing ball with our best friend, with a tennis ball. Have always used a tennis ball with all of our sweeties, never knew that there was any problems with the tennis balls for dogs. Pets Supplies Plus carries another much larger size ball that looks like a tennis ball, but way much larger. Wonder if that one is made the same way as the regular size tennis balls 🙁 Thank you so much Andrew for the really good information
Thanks so much for this….no more tennis balls here!
Thank you again, Andrew-my sister has always had tennis balls as toys for her dogs–I will pass this on to everyone I know with dogs. Thanks-Leigh Ann C.
Thanks. I have never used tennis balls for playing with my dogs, but friends do. I always buy the solid rubber balls, also the “activity balls”.
These are similar to the kong toys, but sleightly bigger so more usefull for
football games.
excellant info on rubber toys for my dogs. from now on it has to be Kong.
thanks,
david.
Andrew,
Thank you so much for this information. I have a 2 year old Beagle that chews apart the tennis balls. I have tried to keep tennis balls away from her and give her the rubber balls instead. I did not know that it erodes the teeth. Thank you again for the useful information.
Thank you for this information. I have been suspicious of tennis balls for pets and children for some time especially since they are almost always “made in China.” L.G.
I have a black lab and pet sit many golden retreivers. I will stop using tennis balls immediately. Thanks for the information. C J Petersen Thomas
Caroline, tennis balls should not be used period. The adhesive is water resistant but more importantly the felt erodes teeth and the rubber can obstruct dogs internally.
Andy
Thanks Andrew—good info. My dogs love to play ball so I will take Tim’s advice and go for the Kong toys.
thank you great to know ……..
I have also heard in the past that the adhesive used in tennis balls is bad for dogs, and that they should only be used for retrieval from water, as the adhesive is then washed away.
I dont think the adhesive will be washed away if they go in the water, they would use a water insoluble glue
