Here’s a recipe that’s super-easy & super tasty.
Its not the healthiest of recipes and one I’ve removed from Dog Food SECRETS a few editions ago in preference of something healthier.
Take a look and see what you think:

I recently lost a dog from poison from dog food, Hats off to you , thank you so much for this recipe, God bless you, your wonderful, and my other four babies thank you too.
Thank you Kim, I could really feel that was a heart-felt expression of genuine gratitude… I enjoyed it very much & thank you in return
buck your addvice hes doing ok but if i could add years to his life its worth a try what can i loose. i love him and want to have him around as long as i can you gave me the info i needed to keep him longer thanks for that.thank you thank you.why don’t this make big news the big companys need to pay. i lost one cat and our oth er cat has kidney damage from the poisen food that went around . did they pay anyone for there looses or vet bills
this type of info is actively suppressed.. a book released by Anne Martin, one of the biggest whistle-blowers on the pet food industry, was listed in Sonoma University’s report of “most censored materials of social significance” in the year it was released
pet food is a $13,000,000,000 industry in the USA alone.. there are powerful forces that don’t want that jeopardized
thanks for sharing this info & recipes with me,its very disturbing about whats in dogfood ,im going to try this recipe out and see how my tina & brody like it!
great, if tina and brody like it, then they’ll definitely like our newer, healthier recipes that come with the latest edition of Dog Food SECRETS
hey, andy is it safe for dogs to eat tuna? ( i was wondering since i have never seen or heard of a dog food that has fish). Usaually, i only see it in cat food. please andy. thx
Hi Ati, yes fish is fine for dogs, especially because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids which are important for heart and nerve function. Commercial dog food typically has little or no omega-3, instead they are high in low quality saturated-fats which cause arteriosclerosis.. this is why heart failure is a leading cause of death in dogs.
Some people say tuna is high in mercury… the issue is not specific to tuna, in fact any fish which grows to a large size can be high in mercury.
I am trying to order the Canine Diabetes package and the ClickBank order form won’t process my request. It states the account hasn’t been activated. There is only a “test” credit card number allowed???????????
Try again Anita.. it is a new product and before we can begin taking orders, the company we use to process all our sales has to first approve our site and product, until that happens only a test credit card, allowing us to test our setup, is permitted.
Good news is we’ve been approved and the product is now available for sale
I just adopted a Terrier from a rescue, and she has the problem of Coprophagia. Can I add a bit of garlic to the recipes I cook up for her to dissuade this nasty habit? Or is there any other ingredient you can suggest?
Thanks much
If you’re reading this and wondering what Coprophagia is, its when a dog eats its own poop. A nasty habit, that include eating the poop of other dogs. When growing up, we had a bitch and her daughter for many years. Even when she was an adult, the daughter would eat poop even as it was exiting her mother… before it even touched the ground.. it is a disgusting habit for sure.
There is much conjecture about its cause and cures.
And its not always a ‘wrong’ behavior. Mothers will naturally eat their puppies feces to keep the nest clean and puppies will eat feces as a form of environmental exploration, but usually will grow out of it.
The behavior can become compulsive and no one is completely sure why. It is believed early domestication of dogs was fort eh direct purpose of eating trash, including human feces and in some impoverished areas of the world, feces can comprise as much as 25% of a dog’s diet.
So if your dog is doing it, it could indicate his diet is not adequate in nutrients.
Some people have success feeding their dogs cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli) because the compounds it leaves in the feces are not palatable to the dog. Of course, feces should be cleaned up as soon as possible and repeatedly catching your dog in the act of eating feces and verbally reprimanding her will classically condition her to associate the 2 events and hopefully deter her from repeating the behavior.
I’ve not heard of success with garlic, you would need quite a bit I think and in large quantities, garlic can damage your dog’s red blood cells (small amounts garlic is a great supplement for number of reasons)
Good luck Ellen
Andrew, I just purchased the gold pack, paid for it thru paypal the payment was confirmed and I also bought the other offer for 7.00 and the payment was confirmed, however, I received nothing! Can you explain!
Check your email Tim, we are an eco-friendly company and have a policy of no-harm to animal or earth and for that reason we have no paper or plastic products, all our materials are downloadable… we do lose business for this reason but we believe it is the right thing to do… sorry for any inconvenience
Hi Tim, I’m glad to see everything was taken care… thanks for your patience and I hope to hear what your dog thinks of the recipes.
Thanks again,
Andy
Hello, I have an older(geriatric)Pug that was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in December 2011. I have started cooking for him to lower his sodium intake per vets suggestion and he is on meds along with an omega 3 supplement. Does your book have suggestions and recipes for dogs with heart disease? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I love my FROG dog with all my heart and I revolve around his world. He is my everything. Thank you for your time.
Kerri and FROG
Hi Kerri…. Frog is a great name for a pug! The Dog Food SECRETS Gold Pack now comes with a guide called Recipes for Dogs With Special Needs, which has a recipe for dog’s with heart disease. — hope all goes well

You are absolutely welcome, definitely don’t feel bad because we are or were under the same ‘spell’ which the dog food companies cast via their marketing… the only reason to feel bad once you know is if we still continue to feed commercial food despite knowing how harmful it is
hiya andy
just wondering is there any dog food that wont take years off my dogs life as i have a 2 year old saint bernard and have been feeding him on royal cainine and red mills
We profile and recommend what we believe are the top 9 best dog food brands in the Confidential Dog Food Report which comes included with the Dog Food SECRETS gold pack
Andrew what do you think about Kirkland’s Dog food? It is rated A by Sarah Iricks’ Dog Food Grading System? If we have a redi available commercial dog food that is acceptable could we boost the protien with turkey, chicken, fish??
Thanks
A low fat, healthy protein is a good way to supplement a diet low in protein.
dear andrew lewis i have ordered your gold package several times. you had just returned from your vacation and lowered it to half price. so i ordered once more. i don’t know what’s gone wrong, i placed my first order for the gold many months ago yet nothing has arrived. i am getting very nervous because i have adopted a very thin and small puppymill 2yr dog.that is why i ordered months early,i was sure i would have the gold set long before katie arrived.i am really worried about caring for her as i said katie is so small and thin. i felt secure knowing i would have time to start cooking, using your recipes and bringing her back to good health. it’s hard to tell you how excited i was when i saw your first video, i read and watched everything you had on line. i don’t have to tell you how much i have learned. it has changed my life, i look at things through fresh eyes, yet i’m feeling insecure as to taking care of her, my plan was to see KATIE thrive with both of us doing our very best using all we have learned i don’t know what to say except PLEASE, PLEASE, get back to me, and figure out what is going wrong and fix it. i needed your books more than a month ago. i understand you must be busy, yet i still hold you to your word, all because of KATIE. I AM HERE WAITING FOR katies gold pack to arrive and an email so i can go to work applying what i have learned from you. my heart holds deep respect and joy for you what you have done for more people than you will ever know*

Hi,we live in Spain and I’m wondering if I can get the vitamins needed to add to the food, it’s a challenge to find anything unusual. Would a human multi-vitamin complex be suitable or not? Also does it really work out cheaper, we’re on a very tight budget but after reading this I’m most concerned. We have 4 dogs and 9 cats! All but 2 of our pets are rescued from the streets, it’s terrible here for animals.I wonder about cat food,is it as bad as the dog food? My cats eat mostly dry food, which is good because of the summer heat, any suggestions please?
If you cook in bulk its definitely cheaper. Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a guide for making cheap homemade supplements which will save you even more money
Are there any dry dog foods at all you would recommend? I dont have time to cook for my dogs. I currently feed Merrick and think its a pretty good dog brand compared to other commercial brands out there.
The Confidential Dog Food Report which comes with the Dog Food SECRETS Gold pack profiles the only 9 brands we use with our own dogs
Hi Andy,
Been right through Dog Food Secrets & the receipes, twice! Shouldn’t we be graduating our dogs on to raw meat (understand that veg has to be cooked), but in the wild they’d be eating raw meat?
look forward to hearing from you.
Aileen.
Hi Aileen, only concerns about raw meat are dangerous microbes. Try dropping it in boiling water for 30 secs before serving.
thanks andy, eversince that video and info from now on im never buying dog food again…….i love my dogs soooo much!!!!!!!
Glad my advice has helped!
Hello, just stumbled across your site last night, and I’m quite interested! I’ve got a German Shepard girl named Rayn, who currently eats Act1um holistic dog food. I wanted to get her good, but fairly afordable food, and this seemed the best. I just compared the ingredients list to some of the recomended ones (blue buffalo, fromm) and it seems comparable. However, despite daily walks/runs of at *least* an hour and a half, usually more, and carefully measured portions, she is kinda fat, and also, tends to be mildly itchy. There are really no better foods availabe around here, and I can’t afford a purely human food diet (minimum wage, fresh out of Mom’s place gal XD) but I want to add at least part home-made. That being said, my question is, approx. how much meat per veggies is in the meat-eggshell-veggie mix you’ve mentioned? half and half? Once I know that, I can go from there 😉
Thanks muchly! Rayn and I appreciate what you do here 😀
Rayn, use about 40% protein. If you’re on a budget try getting a cheap bulk protein, and serve with cheap veggies (juicing carrots, broccoli stalks, cabbage leaves, veggy stuff usually thrown away) and brown rice or oats. Cook in bulk and store. You should find that much cheaper than a good qual dog food and I suspect the itching would disappear. Its not very exciting and should be rotated with other recipes like you find in Dog Food SECRETS but its a start
would this work for puppies and big breed dogs too because i am getting a puppy rottweiler soon.
definitely… Dog Food SECRETS gold pack also comes with a new Puppy Feeding book and a homemade supplement guide, important for big breeds
I wish i would have found your stie year’s ago. My doberman cheyanne was a very sweet and smart girl. I had alway’s fed her dry kibble. She died from cancer in the rib bone’s. To this day thinking of her brings tear’s to my eye’s. All i can say is never again and thank you for showing me the way to take care of my dog’s
You’re very welcome Pete
Dear Andy,
just bought the Gold Pack. Am I right in understanding you are recommending feeding 40% Protein – that seems very high? The kibble I currently feed ranges between 18-24%.
Here in UK I feed James Wellbeloved – would be interested in a UK 9 very best dog foods!
Look forward to hearing from you,
Aileen.
Yes that’s right Aileen, 40% protein. It may seem high but in fact kibble and most other dog foods are way too low and we’ve just come to accept that as normal. In the US the guaranteed analysis requires a minimum of 9% protein! Dogs on average commonly suffer from diseases partly attributable to chronic protein deficiency. Have not done the UK 9 foods yet but look at the ingredients in the 9 Nth Am list for aqn idea of what you should be looking for.
hi andy i was amazed when i came across your site, because i do not believe what the caned foods says is in the tin and as you quoted in your video, they can say what they like the trouble is many people believe it all to be true, i have had papillons now for over 25 years and all have lived to the average age of 17 to 19 and i agree with you 100% its all down to the food they are given, within reason i say if its ok for me to eat then its ok for my dogs they have all love fresh veg, cheese, fish, chicken, chicken hearts and liver, and rabbit, at the moment i have 4 papillon dogs, they all live happy, healthy, lives, i am delighted some 1 like you has brought it out in the open about the dog food companies and the lies they tell us, please keep up the a great job you are doing best regards andy UK
Thanks Andy…. your positive feedback is a welcome experience for me, thank you.
Hi I have read your report and I thought it was one of those scammers trying to get money but then i remembered that food accident and many animals dying from it and they are actually causing the dog a slow painfull death just to get money in there pockets I had a schnouzer (Probaly not spelled right) and we have been feeding her benefull because the breeder lady said and the one day we took her to the vet too get shots and my mom asked the worker what dog food would be good for her and she said none because if you know it or not your actually killing your dog but i didnt believer her at first because vets usally lie and she lied to 17 1/2 years old
Its true most dog foods are laden with chemicals and poisons you wouldn’t wish on even your worst enemy. Feeding your dog healthy, homemade food wass the best thing you could have done for her.
Just found out today that my 10.5 yr old Sheltie has an enlarged spleen and liver. Most of the liver looks good, only one end involved. I have been feeding Rascal BARF and / or Nature’s variety raw food for over 4 years. It made a world of difference — stopped shedding, he was totally lame from commercial food and has been able to hike with us and run up and down stairs. I’m interested in any advice on diet or supplements that could help Rascal in what appears to be cancer — we won’t know until next week the diagnosis.
Fran, dog bio-chemistry changes when a tumor forms and its important the diet should be adjusted also. The diet should be higher in protein and have less carbs because carbs accelerate cancer cell proliferation. The cancer patient ultimately dies from cachexia which is extreme wasting so even before symptoms of wasting appear, nutritional therapy should begin. See more here: Canine Cancer SECRETS
Hi Andrew,

Just got an English Mastiff puppy and I’m planning to spend a long life with her, thanx to you!
Holly
Hi; Just saw the video about making Tuna Dish. Does the book I will recieve show how to cook for three small dogs. Would I just triple recipe? I will be orderin g your book! Thanks for all this good imformation!!! Mary
I’ve always gotten this question a lot Mary and I never used to have an answer..
..but now that we have released many new editions of Dog Food SECRETS, one of the additions we made was including feeding recommendations for each recipe for 5 different dog sizes.
So you’ll find it very easy to decide how much of each recipe to make.
The dog sizes we include quantity recommendations for are:
1. toy dog
2. small dog
3. medium dog
4. large dog
5. extra large dog
Its nice to finally have an answer for that question!
Andy
Hi! Andy, I did by yourbooks. And they are so informative, very helpfull tips. thanks you very much.My dog Duncan is happy and healthy.
AWESOME!! That word describes it best, thank you so much for sharing your positive experience with us Diana… give Duncan a hug from me!
Hi Andrew,
A couple of years ago, I lost my best friend, my chow Timber, he bled out in front of me in my yard from his rectum. I had no clue what was wrong with him. I rushed him to the vet, where she told me he had cancer and needed to be put down. It ripped out my heart. I just got a dog before Christmas last year and it is an Old English Sheepdog. I am so happy that I saw this, because I was a true believer in Pedigree dog food and my vet always tells me no people food. But my grandfather always gave our pets people food and they lived ripe ol ages. It really discusted me to see the dead animals and drugs that are going into dog food. Thank you for opening up my eyes.
You’re very welcome. We’re all brainwashed (including vets) by the pet food industry ($13 Billion in US alone) into believing the best option is feeding every meal of everyday out of a tin or a bag. If we fed ourselves the same way we’d be very unhealthy.
I have 2 old english sheep dogs. I female at 7 years old and 1 male at 8 years old. Currently feeding Diamond Maintenance and premium. But I am currently having a problem with the female not wanting to eat her dog food. What are you feeding your old english sheep dog??
We also have a purebred german shepherd at 7 years old.
What happens if you leave the food out and don’t give her an alternative? If she is still not eating then there may be an underlying health problem. My current dog has NEVER eaten any type of commercial food since it has been in my care, never-ever.
This is the balance to aim for:
40% protein
25% fibrous carbs (vegetable and fruits)
25% starchy carbs (brown rice, oats, quinoa)
10% fats
Dog Food SECRETS contains many super healthy recipes with advice on portion size for dog’s of all sizes. The gold pack also comes with a book of over 200 recipes submitted by other dog owners so you will defintely find something your female will eat.
Good luck
I just received your video today, don\\\’t know when Neta commented, but I agree – plastic bag in the microwave?
Also, why even cook tuna, cheese, bread, seems only the eggs needed cooking and they can be boiled ahead of time. Oil has chemical changes when heated, not good for anyone. Thank you so much for your efforts to encourage dog owners to become aware of their animals health, I almost lost my dog to liver cancer, but after considerable networking I found a diet of complex carbs and low fat that works great – that was 4 years ago.
I keep getting spanked for that video. We’ve released the 4th addition since I made that vid and that recipe is gone. It was a spur of the moment thing and when I began rolling the camera I realized I had not thawed the bread so chucked in the microwave… wish I hadn’t! Thanks for your comments and great to hear you have found a good feeding plan
Hi Andy,
Thank you so much for getting the message out about how horrible commercial pet foods are. I was fortunate enough to see this information years ago. We have 3 mini dachshunds, and we have been making our own dog food for years now. We used to buy the well known expensive foods available at our vet, but when one of our boys became completely paralyzed in his hind quarters due to spinal disc disease, we took him to a homeopathic vet, who used homeopathic remedies, and also advised us to make our own food for him. He told us to buy good quality beef, and cut it up into chunks, drop into boiling water to kill bacteria and grind it up, mix with some brown rice, veggies, and some of the broth. We decided that since we were doing this for one, we would try it with all three. Not only did they all lose some weight, but they were much happier and no digestive distrubances as we had experienced before. We were told to add certain specific vitamins to the food, which we did. Needless to say, we still do this. It is easy, and cheaper. We make huge batches and freeze what we don’t use right away. Our boy who was paralyzed made a full recovery against the odds that the “experts” gave us. He was under chiropractic care, and we had to do water therapy with him as well, but as someone who has studied the benefits of good nutrition, I know that the food we made for him was a major reason for his recovery. Keep up the great work you are doing so that more people will wake up to what is best for there beloved pets.
Denise, what an amazing story. You are a wonderful example of how something seemingly as simple as diet, can make such a significant positive impact. But in reality its no surprise at all because as you clearly understand, diet is of the highest importance in the well being of our dogs.
Thank you for the insite on the dog food. The whole reason I am here is because Akita have had siezures because of the dog food. I had to find out what she could eat. She can have chicken, chicken fats, brewers rice, and dried egg products. I do not know the right amounts she can have in a day or the vitamins and minerials neccesary for her. She is a Siberian Huskey and is only little over 3 months old. We also have her sister Chianti she also will eat this diet. Do you know the nutrietion facts?
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Canine Supplement guide for making your own ultra-high quality supps very cheaply. I’ve been contacted by other readers that changes their dog’s diet based on our books and stopped the seizures.
That only danger in dog food is the corn, you seem very stupid and lying about this matter. The corn in dog food is unhealthy and that is what kills,so dont visit his stupid site cause it IS a scam lying site!this guy is an ass wipe!liars!
Hey everyone, can you believe how nasty some people can be? I usually delete these hurtful posts but I thought I’d let this one thru so we can rally together and let this person know we love our dogs and prepared to take the time to learn how to be an EDO (Excellent Dog Owner)
The recipe has to much salt in it. The tuna and cheese are bad for dogs. Raw eggs are bad for dogs even though he cooks it I would not make this recipe.
Fair enough, can’t say I agree but if you open a tin tonight or rip the top off a bag of kibble instead of making this you just did your dog a disservice.
hello andrew!
it seems as though ANYthing (other than raisins, onions, garlic etc.) is better than the rubbish commercial dog food out there! i’ve heard artemis and orijen are good but hard to find- even in nyc. i tend to give my dog a bit of kibble (3/4 cup per day for a shih tzu) and then round it out with veg, beans, chicken, sardines, pb&j on whole wheat etc from my own healthy stash throughout the day. he’s not an annoying beggar so it works well for me. cheers to your efforts! i wanna see a pic of lil’ ginger! ; )
kirsten
Yes, you are right Kirsten. While using any type of kibble of tinned food is not advised, mixing it with the foods you’ve chosen is much, much, much better than 100% commercial
Is Sardines Ok?
yes sardines are a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, both of which are under supplied in commercial dog food
Andy,
All your reciepes look great! Can\’t wait to get started. My question(s) are:
1. How do you judge how much to feed a dog? I have Great Danes.
2. In commercial food they put chemicals for bone strength (I think) for the larger dogs. Does anything need to be added to the home made food? What? Where would I purchase?
Hi Jackie, no recipes specifically for giant breeds but we do give feeding amount guidance for 5 different dog sizes for each recipe. And Dog Food SECRETS now comes with Homemade Supplement Guide which shows how to easily make supps cheaply which include phosphorous and calcium, the minerals giant breeds need more of.
Hi Andrew
I think your philosophy on dog feeding and recipes are great and I hope that feeding pets a natural diet becomes even more popular. I note that vets usually scowl if you tell them that your dog is on a home-prepared diet. Apparently they see a lot of muscular-skeletal disorders in dogs fed incorrectly. Not to say that they would be helped by the chemical-laden foods that vet clinics sell!
We feed our three dogs a home made diet and have also recently eliminated the best quality dry food. That\’s why I\’m a bit surprised that you use breadcrumbs as a filler (and heat them in the microwave in a plastic bag) I\’m sure it\’s better than commercially produced pet foods – but a loving owner can do better. Also, tuna, being a large fish would contain quantities of mercury, so I prefer to use sardines – which ours love.
Hi Neta, I think its getting time I take that video down… in the new Edition of Dog Food SECRETS 4th Edition that recipe has been removed and replaced with much healthier ones. That video was a spur of the moment thing and my intent was to show how quick and easy it is — retrospectively I’ve always regretted using the microwave but at the time the camera was rolling, things were cooking and then I realized the bread is still frozen! – -haha, poor planning… I think the professionals TV cooks aren’t also the director, producer, lights guy and cameraman (and dishwasher!) .
4th Edition has just been released so its been a very busy several months leading up to it… soon I’ll have time to film a new recipe.
thanks
Andy
Andrew,
I agree with Neta comments 🙂
However, I do love your message and hope you can reach more pet lovers who are just not in the know. I have been home cooking since the last dog food recall.
Very interested in your receipes, but my question to you is what are your qualifications?
Thanks so much.
Bette
Dear Andy, Most Audio&Video clips sent to me (maybe they are just general all mails)are directed toward young puppy training I inherited MY austrailian Shep. Yours Truely,Audie & Aussie
Hi Audie, I wish I could say we are more organized but my specialty is dog nutrition and not dog training so we don’t have the same array of information and topics as you’ll find here on training as we do on feeding, however in our membership site I regularly interview trainers about different aspects of dog training and not just for pups.
HINT: customers of Dog Food SECRETS get membership at less than half-price
Thank you sooo much. I am just starting to cook for my 4 dogs. (children) I was ill to read and see what they put in dog food. I will look forward to getting your recipes. I am going to try the tuna one right now.

chris
I love hearing comments like that! — thanks chris
Hi there can i start my dog on home cooked food straight away or do i have to introduce it slowly ?
Thanx
excellent question sarah, Dog Food SECRETS 4th Edition now comes with a 4-step Changeover guide which shows how to do it without tummy upsets (see preview here: http://www.thedogfoodconspiracy.com/secure_order/descriptions/changeoverguide.php)
Hello Andy,
Wonderful info on the recipes and a wonderful site. I’m not usually one to comment but earlier from another guest comment you recommended nylabone products instead of rawhide. I have been in, and own a large pet treat distribution company. I have been doing this for many many years. Here’s my problem…. While rawhide IS one of the number 1 fatal treats for dogs, you state that it’s from choking. This can be true, but the majority of rawhide problems are actually from ingested pieces getting hung up in the intestine. Moreover, I was shocked to see you then in the same sentence recommend Nylabone type products as the alternative. YIKES! I urge you and your readers to research these treats before providing them to your pet.
jim thanks for your compliments. I sent you a private email because I’m always willing to hear from an expert with more experience than I in a particular field of dog care… if your advice checks out we will change our site and publications — thanks
hi andy i enjoyed watching you cook now i ask i have a pembrokie welsh corgi 25 pounds 3 years old a yorkie 4 pounds 8 yrs old and 2 bichon frises how would i portion out the food i am home so cooking is not a problem also can i precook and refridgerate it and heat to serve or cook fresh and how many times do i feed them a day i do 2 times now look forward to your book
elizabeth, in the 4th edition of Dog Food SECRETS which we hope to release VERY soon (all past customers get all new editions free) we have compiled all new healthier recipes and for each recipe we give guidance on how much of the daily calorie requirement it meets for a small, medium, large and extra large dog.
Hi Andy, I have a lab, 9 yrs old that was severely damaged in the Diamond Dog Food recall. She went into renal failure (which followed Cardiac failure) and was brought home to die after my wonderful vet exhausted all is treatments …well, she’s a tough gal and 2.5 yrs later is still with us somehow. She still has terrible lab values and should be a seriously ill dog when you look at the readings.
She normally weighs 70ish pounds. Her weight while ill was 42 pounds. It was HORRIFIC.
She has been eating Hill’s Science Diet KD for 2+ yrs. Before I invest in the book are their receipts for low protein foods that would be suitable for her.
Thanks so much
Karen, SC
Its amazing Karen how some dogs can survive even the most difficult of health conditions… I’m so pleased your story has a wonderful outcome. I began warning dog owners about the dangers of commercial dog food about 8mths before the 2007 dog food poisoning crisis, I was yelling it from the rooftops and got a lot of grief from people calling me a “nut”. I was saying don’t use commercial food or if you do only the 9 brands we recommend.
thankfully some dog owners listened and NONE of the 9 brands we recommend were recalled — we felt vindicated and proud we were able to help and protect so many dog owners
in the new gold pack of dog food secrets which is due for release very soon, there is a new book called Recipes For Dogs With Special Needs which has a kidney cleansing beef broth recipe but not a main meal kidney recipe
I’ve actually written a book with recipes on canine kidney disease but it still hasnt been released (I’ve actually written a bunch books still not released on kidney disease, diabetes, allergies, weight loss, pregnancy and more…. I get carried away sometimes and write them faster then we can release them)
Hi Andy,
I am a cetified veterinain assistant and have over 30 years experience training puppies and dogs.
I don’t know if you are aware of the fact that any dairy product being fed to a puppy or dog is dangerous for them. Their digestive system can not tolerate anytype of dairy product except those specialy made for canines. It cause lactose intolerence and can the potenial of making them very ill.
If you dog doesn’t have a problem with it yet, great but other canines very well good. It does have the potenial of being fatal because of the voimiting it can cause.
hi carla, thanks for sharing. yes I’m aware of dogs being lactose intolerant so I suggest people only use small amount occasionally and if concerns try an alternative like yogurt where the lactose has been broken down by friendly cultures…. dogs in general love cheese and the occasional treat I feel can be fine if given sensibly… we all treat ourselves to something which is not “perfect” for our health from time to time
I am blown away in regards to these facts about dog food. Why hasn’t anyone gone public on GMA or some place to expose these companies.
This is unbelieveable that I would be buying what I think is the best food for my dog. I won’t give her any people food because they tell me it is bad for her. Now I find that I am or could be causing bad things to happen and possible shorten her life by feeding her these big name dry dog foods. What about the rendering plants. Why aren’t they being exposed? Too many questions and not enough answers. Thank you
Its a $13,000,000,000 a year industry… that’s why it is not common knowledge. There are many published books and vets that have publicly cautioned about the dangers of dog food but some of the biggest companies on the planet don’t want you to know. I think it was Serona University that listed the state of the pet food industry as one of the top suppressed stories of social significance in the past decade (I’m going from memory so you may want to fact check that)
We always cook our dog\’s food. We use turkey, spinach, carrots, peas, rice, sometime heart, livers etc. from chicken. We did this to try to get rid of her scratching. Her coat is beautiful and she is very healthy. We always add vitamins from Dr. Goodpet and flaz seed oil
all top-notch ingredients! the new Dog Food SECRETS Gold Pack now comes with a guide for making your own supplements
You should only use coconut oil when cooking meat…This oil has a higher burning point and has long chain fatty acids which are very healthy…All oils when heated turn canerous, except coconut oil…Also, you should never use a microwave oven to cook anything…The Russians banned microwave ovens in the 1960’s…The molecules in the food when cooked in a microwave become changed to the point of being cancerous to the body…I would also give all dogs flax seed oil and chrolla and spiralina. These foods will prevent cancer and will remove any mercury contained in all fish…
thanks for the tips richard, this recipe is designed to use things you already have in your kitchen…. I’m familiar with the science you mention about microwaves but there is stronger evidence showing microwaves are not harmful
I also recommend the use of flaxseed oil
I have just lost my dog to cancer and looked it up on the net are read about how important there food is!!
Are the receipes you make freezable?
Thanks
yes, most are freezable… I recommend they are made in large amounts and frozen to cut down on daily preparation time. btw, we released a product called Canine Cancer SECRETS
Hello Andy, Thank you so very much for your efforts to spread awareness on this issue. Like many of the comments I have read, I’m so very sad to say I lost both my dogs to now what I believe was eventually, due to their diet. My Lola was Staffordshire bull terrier, and she was euthanised at age 16 (6 years ago) after a year of illness diagnosed initially as Cushings disease, then lastly, liver cancer. Dave was a bull mastiff, who at age 12 deteriorated most rapidly from cancer. Both my dogs appeared to enjoy good health, their only trips to the vet was for the usual: neutering, vaccinations etc. Then in June, Dave had a ‘cough’ (that sounded like it belonged to an old man) for 2 days which I kept an eye on to monitor. During this 2 days, Dave had what I initially saw was a swelling appear on his cheek which I mistook to be a sting, then maybe an abscess developing, so I made an appontment with the vet. The next day when it swelled more , appointment in place, I took him into the vet who took one look at him and said ‘he’s a gonner’ – yeah, my legs buckled at that cold comment! Other than the swelling, his coat shone, he was as active and interactive as a dog his age would be. he just deteroirated so very quickly. The vet insisted that he was euthanised since she stated that he had cancer. I demanded a 2nd opinion to which she said she would have to cut him open which she did not agree to do to confirm this. i agreed, i was shocked and upset at her diagnosis. She said the swelling was his lymph glands ‘packing up’. This was 29.6.09 and I am now feeling even worse since I feel that I their diet could have been responsible. I bought what I believed to be the ‘best’ brand foods for them and now after reading your information I am stunned. I am so bereaved, Lola and Dave were my dearest, dearest friends and loved so very much. Maybe next year I will be able to have a dog, I’m just too upset to act at this time. I can assure you that I will home cook for my next four legged family member. I came across your site whilst checking out bull dogs. Please keep raising awareness, as I shall now. I will advise my friends and dog lovers I know of your site. Im overwhelmed at how this ‘best’ dog food impacts on those we love, they rely on us and we are, or were indeed ignorant. It is with a heavy but sincere heart that I thank you again for your efforts Andy. Kindest regards, Dawn
Thanks very much Dawn… my experience with the vet was very similar, I took Noble in for a “take 2 of these and call me in the morning” type treatment and was shattered when the vet told me to euthanize right there on the spot. I also couldn’t agree and tried all kinds of expensive foods and medicines but it was too late, his kidneys were destroyed from the toxin-laden food I’d been feeding him. Although Lola and Dave are gone, I’m happy to say when you do get another dog, if like me, you’ll fall-in-love all over again with your new furry-friend.
THANKS for the dog food recipe! I know my three cocker spaniels will love this new “treat”!
I have just one question: do you have any more homemade dog food recipes?
Thanks again for sharing.
Kathy
P.S. I enjoyed the video very much, but I have to agree with other
folks: it would be much better if we could actually see the food!
kathy, in the gold pack of dog food secrets you get access to around 300 recipes
The term Choc-o-block is an old english naval term when rope pulley blocks have reached the maximum advantage, ie. won’t go any further.
By the way i am a wolf and smiled at the tuna recipe having just gorged myself upon a three month old caribu corps. I burried some of the bones so they will soften in the earth and then when i am hungry i can dig them up and eat them….
Come on Andy you can’t be serious huh?
Thanks for letting us know where the term choc-o-block comes from Colin… glad you found my tuna recipe amusing, as you are a wolf I wouldn’t recommend it, however, if you have any domesticated friends please pass the recipe on.
something i found in my resech thought ud like to know
However, there are some seemingly innocent foods that can in fact be extremely dangerous to dogs – here are just some of the foods listed by the ASPCA as potentially dangerous for dogs (click here for their complete list):
Grapes
Raisins
Nuts
Avocados
Raw eggs
Most fruit stems, pits & seeds
Unbaked bread dough
Alcohol
Chocolate
Baking powder and soda
Coffee grounds and beans
Mushrooms
Sugarless Chewing Gum (and other foods with Xylitol)
Nutmeg
Onions and garlic (stay away from baby food as well as some contain these spices)
Thanks Pam, that’s very useful!
There is a very similar list in Dog Food SECRETS
about my girl
lady bird pruden
shes very loving and beautiful black lab. part of our family.we got her as puppy at 3 months old. shes protecter my childern a hunting dog and my sezior dog. all came by natural institins not trained except for hunting training . shes a very vauable animal and meber of our family. shell be 3 this dec.
recently shes gotten weird infection on her not just on the body but face as well.
we took her to vet naturally.
she got shot of anitibiotics and cortizon. also pills antibitic ones for 7 days.
vet said if didnt clear up hed treat her for mange.
she did have couple fleas on her from her getting out off chain ran down by creek things.
vet said she is allrgic to flea saliva.
but i dont think thats all it is consdiering sores on her face now that she get rubibg on bleeding.
my question is what do u think about this? and what i should ask the vet on her next vist?
from what i read maybe dog food allergiy as well or mybe worse type staff infection or bactiera keeps her from healing.
in mean time im resecing diffent dieses what not making my own dog food cook book im putting togerther from diffent sites for my own use.
what should i ask.
Hi Pam,
one of the probs with allergies is the staf-bacteria which is commonly found on the skin can get access via the weakened immunity and open wounds created by allergies & subsequent scratching. If your dog does not have a history of allergies then the cortisol may be enough to clear it up. If not, then I strongly recommend you find an holistic vet because they generally have much better success with treating difficult allergies than mainstream vets.
It doesn’t sound like a staff infection. My little shih tzu ended up with one from a contaminated chip. She developed a bump at the injection site, lost her hair there and it will never come back. I am thinking it is some kind of food allergy.
thanks for sharing Scherees
My dog (English Springer Spaniel)his name is Micado he is very weak and his weight 9 kg.
tell me what should i do for his health.
thanks & Regards,
Fayaz
Fayaz, absolutely the first thing you must do is visit a vet. Sorry I cannot be more specific but you need a diagnosis before you can decide what needs to be done.
Great recipe
glad you like it marie
Hi I truly agree with you. I come from a asian country I had a dog for 17yrs and even my children played with him and I gave all what we cooked at home daily rice and curry also boiled meat bones not anything raw as they say when you give raw meat they bite people. I had this dog such a long time he was so protective and better than some human beens I could say. Now I live in Australia and settling here and we got a Maremma it\’s only 4 1/2 months similar to dog what I so I put the same name to him (snowy)
we wanted to give home food but it didn\’t agree for him so we had to give supermarket stuff although we didn\’t like it. But recently he got sick and somebody told boiled chicken breast with rice for 2days believe it or not he stomach was ok and since then I started to give home cooking.
Yes, feeding your dog homemade from the start is the best insurance against a host of health problems and premature death.
I’ve heard many, many stories about dogs making remarkable improvements in health from a change from commercial to homemade food
well done, keep it up chris!
Had this link for over 2 months. Finally sat down to watch it. Would you believe it was the “choc-o-block” full term (made me laugh) and the final comment “made with love” that won me over. I always cook with love for people…..but had never thought of cooking with love for my dog! You are dead right, opening a tin or ripping open a packet just doesn’t speak “love”! So now I have no good reason not to cook with love for my buddy! PS. the healthy spin is cool, and probably the most important…. but it’s funny what grabs you!
I still haven’t heard if “choc-o-block” is used in Nth America… if not its a new one you can try with your friends!
Glad you enjoyed the video, I really believe in the importance of the ‘love’ ingredient.
thanks!
Can you feed puppies the same meals, or do they require something different? I just got an 8-week old Blue Heeler and want to keep her healthy.
I had to put my 13-year old heeler to sleep a couple of months ago and it about did me in. After reading your information, I realized I could have done so much more for her. She had a large mass in her stomach, and liver enzymes were 10 X higher than they should have been. She went from what I thought was fine, to very ill in a week.
Last year my vet told me she had the heart of a much younger dog. Little did I know she had a monster growing inside of her.
Gina, a commercial dog food diet is a process of slow decay in the health of your dog. I’ve been at this for years and heard many, many stories about the dramatic change in a dog’s health, vitality and enjoyment of life by changing to a balanced homemade diet.
If you’ve read my Dog Food SECRETS website or seen my video then you know why.
Puppies have different nutritional needs to adults, the new version of Dog Food SECRETS which is soon to be released comes 4 puppy recipes… if you get a copy of Dog Food SECRETS now you’ll get the update issue free.
hey i love my dog and i love home cooking for him, i was wondering if there were any book stores in canada that i could buy it from. considering i dont have a credit card or anything to order things online? im going to try this recipe tomorrow with my pup he will probably like it he likes anything that tastes fishy but he is a real connisseur when it comes to food. and its hard to find things he likes. id love to see your recipes and find out what kibbles you like.
my books are only available online sorry Gillian, we are a Eco-Friendly company and follow a Nurture-Nature policy which includes no tree destruction or wood bleaching chemicals.
in regard to your fussy dog, here are some tips to make him less fussy:
– concern #1 is finding out if his fussiness is health related so visit the vet for a checkup
– if he turns his nose up at the food you give him, don’t immediately place something different in front of him because its training him to be fussy… instead leave it and wait until he’s hungry enough that he’ll eat it
– max of 2 small meals a day because giving more may make your dog appear fussy but in actual fact he’s simply full
– leave your dog to eat in peace, staring can make him uncomfortable
If all else fails try this… put the food in front of him and if he doesn’t begin eating in immediately take it away and throw it in the bin while he watches. Dogs can make an association
of cause and effect if the events occur within 10 seconds of each other, so don’t delay too long. Repeat this process for each meal until he makes the association and begins to chow down the moment his bowl hits the floor.
We have 3 dogs. Dinky, a pekingese (8yrs old), Sandy, a jack russell (6yrs old), Sally, a beagle (that weights 68 lbs. we think about 11yrs old). All our dogs were give to us, or rescued. They are our children. Would like to find a recipe to help Sally loose weight.
Its more a matter of calorie control and exercise than a specific diet however you can make it easier by trimming fat from meat, providing the bulk from vegetables etc.
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Special Needs book which has a weight loss recipe in it.
I’ve also written a book on weight loss for dogs but it has not been released yet, coming soon.
Your information about the dog food industry is correct. I have been following a natural food regime for myself and my pets for 20+ years. FYI the bread that you are using have you read the ingrediants ???
tuna-mercury content??
cheese-is rennet present in yours???
and this is not the best fat source.
I am currently working on my book for both humans and pets that is both nutritional and environmental!!!!!!
Thank you for educating people on commercial dog food but i can help you on your choices for the food that you are using in your recipes;they are not 100% organic or environmental>
hi leanne thanks for your comments, the objective of the video is not to make the healthiest dog food ever…. its to get dog owners to prepare a homemade meal for their dog for the first time and see just how easy it is & how much their dog loves it (most love this one). so I use a recipe which has ingredients everyone probably has in their pantry right now. this recipe may not be the healthiest on earth but if a dog owner tries it, see for themselves how easy it is and start making food instead of buying commercial, then there will be one healthier, happier, longer living dog because of it and my objective is achieved.
BTW, the recipes in the main book are much healthier and well balanced then the quickie-recipe you saw here.
seeing as you are writing your first book and I’ve been at this for many years and sold tens of thousands of copies of many different books, my advice to you is the more difficult and demanding your recipes are, the less owners will actually make them
Can you please e-mail me the instuctions i didn’t hear it very well i really love my dog and want her to keep her healthy
You can download the full recipe here:
http://healthy-k9.com/16/the-recipe-for-terrier-tuna-egg-and-cheese-supreme/
Low-grade mince (or other real meat), rice or oats and cheap vegetables (juicing carrots, brocolli stalks, cabbage, outer lettuce leaves) cook it up in a pot, keep all your egg shells and throw them in for calcium, pour in some flaxseed oil for omega 3 fatty acids
–> John, that right there is a super easy, super healthy, super cheap meal you can make in bulk and store
thanks, Andy L
I feed four big dogs total weight 130 kg plus a little dog. Have you any practical suggestions for producing dog food on an appropriate scale and where to source the ingredients?
See my comment above
thanks Andy, this is great! How nice to be able to whip up a meal for my dogs, that is healthy, knowing it will keep them healthy. My Kelpie, Max would not gain weight on cheap dog food, so I switched to a better brand. He loves home made doggie stews too. I am very interested in your book also. Thanks for making this info available to us all.
Cheers
Andrea
Hi Andy, well i saw your video, n tried it out, and boy, my 2 little dogs loved it, will u put anymore recipes up. how much is your book, and is it available in Australia, Sydney, and get this, my daughter tasted it, and she loved it. THANX, I WONT BUY TIN STUFF, NOW. Thank you. Theresa.
Hi Andy….
I’m happy to say that i’ve never fed any of my dogs tinned dog food as being horse mad from the age of 6 and then later learning exactly what happened to abused unwanted horses who ended up as “Doggers” on their way to the knackery or as alot of people call it “The Glue Factory” i was horrified and even now after 24yrs working with horses it still upsets me to think of what a tin of dog food is actually made up of and now after reading about what happens to all those euthanised dogs and cats etc i just wanted to be sick… I have a question for you though about your terrier tuna dish which i know my dogs will enjoy as they’ve eaten all of the ingredients before (well cept for the egg shells) but if i offered that to my Great Dane it’d be gone in 5 seconds then he’d look at me and be saying ok its passed the taste test you can give me the rest now lol…I’m hoping your book will also provide suggestions to altering your recipes for the larger dogs as i also have a Bull Mastiff….
you’ve gone from having a horse to having a dog that eats like a horse! lol — low grade meat, with rice and veggies is a good meal for a dog. toss in some egg shells and flaxseed oil and no commercial brand can compete
Hi Andy….
Very interesting video, but I am wondering one thing. I’ve read in so many different places that you should not give your dog or cat for that matter canned tuna because of the high mercury content. Is this true?
I would be most interested in hearing what your experts have to say about this.
I have found your information very helpful and I’m sure my beloved Brandi will as well.
Thanks.
you could be ultra health conscious and not use tinned tuna because of mercury concerns, but its only valid if you use another homemade alternative…. if you continue to use commercial dog food because of concerns about mercury your dog will be worse off
Hi Andy,
Thanks for what your doing for all our dogs. Unfortunately I found your website the day after my 13 year old three legged pomeranian Tish passed away from heart failure caused by reoccuring fluid on the lungs a side effect of cushings desease. I will eventually get another dog and do things very differently. I will get your book when i\’m ready and be better prepared, I just need some time to recover fron the loss of my baby.
Thanks again, kindest regards Kerry.
cheers for the mail! ive got some good recipes my wee chick(ki) loves lentils? how cool is that????????. i cook most times for her as ki will eat most of our food. which iam well happy about she doesnt like tuna. which is good news for the fish! hee hee
lentils? I’ll have to try that
HI ANDY!
I just recently came across your website this morning as i was thinking of buying a Wolamute, and was astonished to see the truth of things! That is horrible, of course people like “them” would cover it up! It’s truly repulsive! Actually not too long ago my dog Buster passed away he lived for 17 years! but he had kidney failure, heart worms, and caner! He was always inside until my uncle passed away and gave the schnauzers to my grandmother…then she just left them outside! Shotsi passed away within a couple years of being outside! I was so mad my grandmother wouldn’t take them to get cleaned…they were soooo far gone she told me! so I stole him and took him to get cleaned and everything i tried cutting off the matted fur and yes…i said matted! but i was afraid i would hurt him so i took him to a close friend of mine and she didnt even recognize him because he was that bad. he was cleaned up and happy! but then a few months later we found out all his problems! and my mother took him to go get youthenized while i was at school! i didn’t know until i came back and called to my empty room. Now i cant help but think how betrayed i feel by many people i trusted. (Apparently it was poison that killed him!) now i feel very strongly about not feeling them that crap! but my stepfather wont allow me to feed my dog gunner the “good” food! because he is a big dog and he needs real food in order to maintain his energy for being a hunting dog! how can i persuade him to let me!? i need serious help! i already told him i dont “have” to buy anything although it would be preferred…but its just a book! i showed him pictures and your website, but to no avail.
Please help me convince him, he is so hard headed and i don’t want my dog to suffer for his big ego!
Thanks!
🙂
jeanne, try cooking up some low grade meat with rice, egg shells and cheap veggies and feeding that to your dog for a couple weeks. The person you are trying to convince will see for themselves what a big difference even a simple diet that that can make in the health of a dog that only eats commercial food — thanks, andy
Hi Andy, thank you for the recipe. I would love to see your doggy! I got a toy pomeranian the cutest sweetie pie in the whole world. Thank you for the great work you are doing to keep dogs healthy and inform people of the dangers of commercial dog food!
Regards Charice

Hi I was pretty shocked at your video, I knew most dog foods (especially grocery brands, purina, iams, hills ect.) aren’t what they’re cracked up to be and DEFINATLY not worth the outragous price, but I had no idea how the ingreidents could harm my dogs!! I have two beautiful female pit bull terriers
one is six years old and until just a year ago I had no idea about dog nutrition, I was feeding her Purina Dog Chow, but now I have them both on
BLUE BUFFALO and i was wondering if that one is ok or not, I dont have alot of money but certainly dont want to feed my dogs crap, im not sure how cost effective feeding fresh food is but im thinking its more than i can afford right now And people just so you know these are a list of crappy dog food In the U.S. at least!! starting at the crappiest!! Ol’Roy(or any brands you can get at a dollar store!!)Purina (ALL VARIETYS, TYPES and sub brands))Iams, Pedigree,Pro Plan,Science Diet (even vet perscribed, if your dog hadnt been eating crap all its life it probably wouldnt nedd a persripction food in the first place!! think that over!!) Now these are some foods that are fairly decent, cost effective if you cant buy fresh(remember foods vary by state and country so you may not be able to get these foods easily or i may have left some out because they do not appear in my area of the country)
BLUE BUFFALO, WELLNESS, SOLID GOLD, HALO, DOG WHISPERER, NATUAL BALANCE but nat. balance gets alot of ingreidents from other countries so be careful!!
thats all i can think of right now
I like Blue Buffalo — andy
Thanks Andy,
I have always enjoyed cooking for my Koolie and she loves the meals I make her. When we got her she had been starved so it was important to boost her weight and give her high quality protein.
My favorite is to chop up offal; hearts, livers, giblets, kidneys and boil for 15 minutes with rice or macaroni and chopped up veggies. This is really cost effective too – you can buy offal for about $3 per kilo. To thicken the mix just add some rolled oats or even gravox. It is a nutritious meal that will keep in a batch in the fridge for about 5 days. To serve I just take the chill off it in the microwave.
I am loathe to feed her canned food. I can’t be sure of the quality and source of meat in it and there is so much goo and muck in even the “best quality” brands.
yes, when selecting dog food we dont want to make the mistake of assuming ‘well-known’ equals good quality. well-known really means ‘well-advertised’
Hello Andy,
thank you very much for the video, and for sharing with us your love and concern about the furry ones. I am totally agree with you that it does make a difference a food prepared with love and good thoughts about the little one who is completely depends on you, and whom you love unconditionally. And this is very kind of you to share this recipe with us. My dogs (Doberman and Scottie) are on Spot’s Stew diet (holistic nutrition for dogs) that I use to buy at the Whole Foods, and now it’s possible to get it from Petco. It seems better for my guys than a Solid Gold diet. However I always add once a day meats (organic from farms like buffalo, lamb, beef, chicken, beef hearts)/veggies stew that I make for them myself… I just add cooked barley instead of breads…and don’t include cheese/eggs. I heard that they shouldn’t eat the whole egg… don’t know if this is true. I give them small pieces of raw liver (organic from an organic farm), with a little bit of chlorella, which is good for them. I agree with you about the commercial food value. The only concern i have switching them completely to home made diet is about minerals and vitamins they should get…like the amount of flaxeed oil they should get… etc… Also weather I will be able to maintain their healthy diet in case if I move to a state or a place where there will be no farms or so or farms will be too far away from my place… I wouldn’t be able to get this type of food from the Whole Foods, it’s too expensive. Raw diet sounds good to me but it’s too expensive, and I wouldn’t want to switch back and forth… Could you explain the nutritional value of the recipe?
tuna – protein, omega-3 fatty acids
cheese – calcium, Vitamin A & D
eggs – protein
bread – fiber, carbohydrate
you shouldn’t use this recipe and nothing else, veggies are also important
UPDATE: I use less wheat products (flour, bread) than I did before
Thanks, I was looking for something to alternate with what I prepare for my dog. I do NOT trust any of the pet food companies.
You might be interested in the high quality, easy and nutricious recipe I use for my dog. I\’ve checked with my vet who heartily approves (including the vitamins).
Canned peas and carrots.
I divide a can into 2 containers, using one and freezing the second, to insure freshness.
Brown rice.
I cook 2 cups at a time but keep a small zip-lock for daily use and the remainder divided and frozen…always fresh.
Chicken thighs. (I cook about 5 lbs. at a time and freeze it.)
These are meatier. breast meat is very dry. Remove skin and fat put in teflon coated skillet or spray lightly w/cooking oil. Cook slowly, turning frequently until cooked through-about 45 min.-1 hr. Drain on towel paper because there\’s still a lot of fat in the chicken even though you\’ve cleaned it. Put 3-4 pieces in zip-lock bags. Keep one out and freeze the rest.
MEAL TIME
Depending on the size of your dog (mine\’s 8 lbs.) i put a tablespoon each of vegestables and rice, then take the meat off the bone and chop it. You can include the white gristle/cartilage/joint at the end of the piece of chicken. Do not include any of the bone as chicken bones splinter!!!
Sprinkle \"MISSING LINK\" dog vitamin powder over it (amount according to size of dog) to include alpha-lipoic acid, glucosamine, chrondoitin, etc.
I tried combining and then freezing but she really didn\’t like it that way. ?? But put together at meal time is fast easy, nutricious and SAFE.
The beauty of this is it can be prepared a week at a time as long as the ingredients are frozen to retain freshness.
Good luck, keep up the good work looking out for our precious little critters.
Kay
Awesome, thanks for sharing Kay!
Hi,
Me and my Boxer live in Florida. You are sayin that all commercial dog food contains bad stuff in it, But is it possible that there is good dog food out there. Like maybe Eukanuba, i here many great things from it, but i wanted to know your opinion on it.
Oh and when your dog Ginger started to eat your home made dog food, did she love it at first or took a couple days for her to eat it?
Well thanks for the heads up on comercial dog food and hope Tyson loves the homemade food i will make for him.
ideally, in a perfect world you’d take about 4 weeks to change your dogs diet from commercial to home made [UPDATE: our latest release of Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a 4-week Changeover Guide — awesome!!]
there are some good foods out there, but take notice of who is saying they are good. I get nothing for recommending the 9 I have in my report, in fact those companies have probably never even heard of me, I dont know. I recommend them because I believe in them and happily feed to Ginger — andy
ANDY
WE BREED SMALL YORKIES, IS THERE A RECIPE FOR PREGNANT DOGS . THAT WOULD NURISH AS WELL AS THERE UNBORN PUPPIES. I WANT THE BEST FOR MY BABIES ( MY DOGS ) . ONLY THE BEST FOR MY DOGS,
we have now added a special needs to the Dog Food SECRETS package which includes a recipe for pregnant dogs and another for lactating (breast feeding) dogs
HI ANDY,
I LOVE THE GOOD RECIPES FOR MY DOGS. BUT IF YOU WOULD MOVE THE CAMERA BACK SO THAT WE CAN SEE WHAT ALL YOU DO. WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER. YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY CAROLE
lesson learned carole, thanks
Hi,
We live in England and have a staffy who is trained to detect low blood sugar. The vet says he is one of the fittest dogs he has ever seen and we also have a housecat who is fed on Whiskas pouches because she was badly bitten by another staffy two years before my dog was born. My dog has been brought up with cats since he was eight weeks old and is fed on Bakers complete dog food, and so were three dogs before him. There is no EQ in it (thank God). Of the previous dogs, the golden labrador lived to 16, the German Shepherd to 14 (they were both rescued) and the staffy is still living (with my daughter) and is eleven years old, though she nearly died last year from mammary tumours and pyormetria but after surgery is still thriving. My dog loves everyone and all dogs except for rottweilers – he has been attacked on three different occasions by intact males of that breed.
I could only read part of the article it was so upsetting, and I have been training dogs since before I went to school and I am 67 next week.
I have never heard of a dog living beyond 24, and am told the average age for a staffy is nine years. Mine is five.
Hope your dog continues to have a happy life.
Lorraine
thanks Lorraine
what does ginger look like?
shes a yellow lab with a tan nose
we have four adult dogs and four puppies. One of the adult dogs is about to have another set of pups. And we would like to get the book if at all possible, so we can start making our own food for them. With all the dog food recalls we don’t feel safe buying from the store. You made it so ease. I’m sure we can do the same for ours. I remenber when I was a kid my folks never bought dog food for their dogs . they ither got food scraps or they ate what the livestock got. When my brother worked at the dairy in town they would save the old milk for my dad and he would mix it up with hog feed and thats what the dogs and the hogs would eat. And they lived a ripe old age. They say eggs will make the dogs coats shine. Thanks for the recipe.
Hi Andy,
Very interesting, and you are clearly a good bloke and a dog lover (usually the same thing). Your approach to canine nutrition is exactly opposite to ours, but we have had a lot of success with rescue dogs off death row over four decades. Only one has developed cancer, and none renal failure. The Brit dry dog food we use has only BHA and BHT as preservatives, but does contain ash for all the essential minerals. We have had no luck with wet foods. Brit law requires poop scooping and our two lurchers Marra and Tanni have lovely firm, silky turds which are easy to collect intact. Wet canned food equals sloppy smelly turds and smelly dogs.
The big problem with many dog breeds (and people) in our damp little island is arthritis in the hips and spine, which eventually causes great pain and the dog starts to lose interest in life. Strong painkillers only give two to three years of relief and there is no plan B. There is no good day to have a dog euthanised, but no excuse for prolonging a stoically borne and increasingly sedentary life of agony for purely selfish reasons. We cry, then go back to death row to start again and give a healthy dog some bonus quality years.
However much our approaches vary, you are clearly on the side of the angels. Keep up the good work.
Jim (GB)
thanks jim, its nice to meet a gentlemen that can have a different slant on things to myself without wanting to crucify me for it
Andy,
We want to see your dog!!!
And I agree, there is lots of info stating mirowaves are harmful, heating anything in plastic is harmful, and you don’t know everything in the commercial bread or the cheese. So I definitely think you are on the right track, please keep improving your receipies with feedback you can research. Updating your receipes does not make you look foolish, rather, it makes you seem more caring and insightful. We all grow and change and I trust you more when you realize something needs updating. Again, please let us see you dog 🙂 Thanks from Canada
we are just putting the finishing touches on Dog Food SECRETS 4th Edition which has all new recipes and none of the main course meals have flour or bread. I congratulate you if you take your dog’s nutrition to the degree of not using commercial made bread or cheese. our recipes are meant to achieve the balance of healthy AND practical because for most, only using all organic, homemade ingredients requires more time and money than we have available. But thanks for keeping me on my toes, I appreciate the feedback.
Hi Andy,
I have been volunteering for dog rescue for 8 years now, and I am aware of many of the horrible facts that you said in your report. I fret all the time whether I am feeding my dog the best I can. I feed Dick VanPatten, Natural Balance, Fish and Sweet Potatoe. The last fad is one protein, one carb. I have been feeding my female Boston 6.5 years old a gluten free diet for about 4 years (thankfully long before the China issue). However, like you say, I am terrified that there is something in there that is not reported as it should be. From every thing I have read, the only kibble better is Solid Gold. I am concerned that her poops are about the same size as the amount of food she is getting. I took care of another dog this week, he is on a vet food, and his poops are noticable smaller as conpared to what he is eating. So the logic is he is breaking down the food and getting more from it that my dog on my food. I have been thinking of raw, but that is a huge commitment. I am willing to try your food first. so, I guess I have reading to do!
I am hoping you comment on some of the .
it makes sense that dogs eating highly nutritious food excrete less.. low grade commercial dog food contain fillers like corn and vegetable proteins which fill your dogs belly but pass thru without benefiting your dog’s body. Raw is a popular alternative but the concerns then are harmful bacteria from uncooked food, I’ve experienced salmonella myself and it near killed me so I prefer cooking the food enough to at least sterilize it. Its true dog’s evolved from wolves that ate raw flesh but they were domesticated 15,000 years ago and their diet has been very different ever since.
MANUELA, I don’t know when you posted… a cough after that many days can be more than kennel cough. I don’t want to scare you. Have Mimoza been tested for heartworm or other heart health? Coughing is often a sign that the heart is in distress. I really hope it is only kennel cough.
All the best for Mimoza…xoxoxo
Hi Andy, thank you for the recipe. I didn’ t try it yet, i will tomorrow. I m worried about my 4 years old dog- Mimoza. She had the kennel cough, and it is still not going away after 4 weeks, she actually doesn t cough, but just her breathing is not quite right and her nose and eyes are very wet all the time – dropping water, just water. She has been sad for 2-3 days and she doesnt want to eat and she is only in her bed all the time. Maybe she will eat this one. The doctor said it must go away by it s self, because it is just like a cold, but i see it is not going, actually. I really hope she will eat this one.
Please give me an advice if you can.
Hi Andy, very shocked by your information! It\’s terrible this is going on and yet we dont know a thing about it! Why has no action been taken againsed these companies? I will definantly be buying your book now.
Im wondering if Australian standards are different to USA when it comes to dog food.
I have my pure Rottweiler, 1yr old, on Advance dry food (combined with other things like VIP dog sausage & bones etc. of course.) Im told it is the best quality for large breeds, to asisit with growth and apparently contains all the daily minerals and vitamins they need. Im a Now Im confused. Is this respected brand also dangerous for him? I hope not.
By changing his diet to home made how can you make sure he still gets all the right minerals in his diet? Frying food can take a lot of the good vitamins out of it and there is no point eating it. Do you recomend still buying extra supliments and vitamins in tablets added to the dinner you make? As some breeds need more of certain things than others, like Rotties needing extra calcium at this young age. Im ready to cook more for him but at the same time don\’t want to take him off his dry food if it\’s not a bad brand but giving him what he needs. xo
Dog Food SECRETS now comes with a Homemade Supplements Guide which contains 3 homemade supplement recipes and 1 detox recipe. They are very cheap and easy to make, add these to the recipes we’ve created, following our guidelines and your dog will be the healthiest on the block, guaranteed.
Hey BogDan……….Dick Van patton’s natural balance will cure that skin prob! cured my Westie…& keeps his anal glands empty. best premium for the price range.
I have ALWAYS heard that egg yolks are not good for the dogs. I can understand the cheese yet not the eggs???? Also don’t dogs need greens? I use Green Mush for my cats and dog. They don’t get the drooping hind areas as they age. My cats live to be over 20 years of age. I don’t buy any food from the grocery store. I would cook for my dog and I don’t even cook for myself! I am vegan yet I feel that the animals are carnivores so I am fine with giving them the meats. Yet the egg yolks are killing me…what to do? Where can I get a recipe book for my cats? xo
Good points, dogs do need greens… this recipe should not be the only thing you feed your dog, include recipes with veggies etc. Our recipes are a carefully designed collection of recipes that your dog will love, but just like you they need to vary the ingredients to get all nutrients. The Homemade Canine Supplement book which comes with Dog Food SECRETS has supps that will complete your dogs needs
Great video, my dog loves it. Are dog biscuits and dental chews also dangerous?
Depends what they are made from. Don’t use rawhide chews because they can cause choking, use nylabone type products instead. Most commercial dog bikkies are rubbish
thanks andy. I thought cheese is bad for dogs even the other dairy products. But still your the best! XD
yoghurt and cottage cheese are good alternatives. the cheese debate still rages but I think the occassional bit of cheese as a treat is fine (unless your dog has an intolerance). it contains Vits A, D and E as well as calcium and protein
Thanks Andy. But I thought that cheese and all dairy products were bad for dogs (as they are for humans, but that’s another story)? Our vet specifically told us not to feed our adopted little terrier (mixed with lots of other dogs) cheese or milk. I’m confused now, as you seem to know what you’re doing. I’ll get the book though. Thanks from France.
June 18th I lost my best friend of 10 years. We had been feeding her very high quality food in N.C made just for her & delivered to our home , when we moved back to Can.last yr.that food was not available here so we started feeding her Iams mature chicken, supposed to be the best , I hope it is not one on your hit list .She had a 10 # tumor plus her spleen removed Jun 15th ,she lasted 3 days & died I think of a blood clot to her lungs .After reading your article I feel so much guilt that maybe I was slowly killing her .I am in the process of researching another pet and to be sure will be feeding the new addition differently. Thanks for your insight into this problem, what an eye opener
Thank you for the recipe!! I have been feeding my Westie since she was 6 weeks old the same meal. Chicken breast, brown rice, oatmeal, olive oil. She seems tired of it. I will try the tuna – never thought about my dog eating tuna!!!
hey thanx for giving me that recipie i am sure mom baby girl holly will just LOVE it!!! i am so happy i found out know so it is not to late! I LOVE her so much and want her to live as long as she can because she is my first dog and she is the sweetest dog!!!
Hi Andy
Had to have our beloved Corgi put to sleep 2 days ago, cant stop crying. I came across your site looking for Kidney Failure in dogs, what an interesting piece. My dog was 11 years old to think I could have prolonged his life makes me feel so guilty. IF we get another I will know what to do. Thanks for the info.
Sue
I feel your pain… been there, Noble died from kidney failure. I have a Canine Kidney SECRETS book in development now, sorry it comes too late.
I need help My dog have problem skin
Its probably an allergy, quite possible from food additives. Try home preparing food and see what happens.. it usually helps. Our product Canine Allergy SECRETS has a lot of great info for dogs with allergies
Hi there…a big thing that I think concerns most of us is the amounts to feed the dogs when we are cooking our own food etc. Also, I need to mention that your breads used was commericially prepared….you could make your own, or just not include the bread…and it should be toasted in a toaster, not put in a microwave oven in a plastic bag. There\’s no need to leave it in the plastic and plastic leaches. RE: the tuna…it contains mercury…there are better types of fish to use and you can find resources to buy it wholesale or buy fresh frozen at Costco etc. Dogs don\’t care what type of fish it is and the oily types provide all the fats they need without the cheese. You can grind it up so as to make sure no bones etc…you really don\’t need the cheese and bread at all. They will love straight fish and eggs, done in a non stick pan with no added oil…or a tiny bit of olive oil. Think HEALTHY if you\’re going to do this stuff. 😀
PS I also use By Nature Organics Kibble…sold at Petsmart. I have researched the company thoroughly…and has done wonders for my rescue dog who I got with diarrhea, hair loss, and itching. She\’s looking amazing now…thick, shiny beautiful coat, no stomach problems, happy, no itching….she eats a wide variety of things from certain fruits, veges, and meats, fish, with a small amount of kibble twice a day. She\’s weighed constantly and her weight is remaining consistent and healthy. I can\’t stand fat dogs and their owners either for making them that way. It\’s not love. Thanks for listening….
those are all valid remarks, thanks. the point of the video is to show you probably have the ingredients in your kitchen right now to prepare a healthy meal for your dog. Its true we can take the ‘health-kick’ to the nth degree by following some of your suggestions but for most its impractical. if I make the recipes over-the-top healthy by listing only expensive, hard-to-get or prepare ingredients, most owners won’t make them.
Hi Andy! I am very excited to get your book. I have been wanting to
cook for my Golden Retriever for a long time, but have not really known how to do it right. He is 10 years old and been dealing with allergies. I’m hoping this will help him be healthier. I’ve fed him what I thought was top of the line dog foods, but now am wondering if I’ve been had. Anyway, thanks for the info and recipe. That will be Beau’s dinner tonight. So sorry to hear about the loss of your last dog. I know you’ll have many wonderful years with Ginger! God bless and thank you for caring about our beloved animal companions.
Loved the idea of cooking your recipe for my baby. She is a chihuahua cross Tibetan spaniel. I already cook for her rice, carrots, potatoes, brocolli, beans, peas plus chicken, pork, lamb or beef with an egg for her din din . She eats Eukanuba (Kibbles) in the day and we live in the Gold Coast in Australia.
I will buy your book for sure but let me get a few things sorted out before i do so. thanks Andy. You made my day.
Hello Andy, Have just finished watching your video and are interested in the book. Was wondering if you can buy it here in New Zealand? You are so right about the tins of dog food and I often look at it and think that its smells awful looks like crape. Are interested in your suggestions on viatmins, minerals and the foods you should not feed your dogs.
Thank you Steve from NZ
you can buy the books anywhere, we deliver them over the internet so location is not an obstacle. Dog Food SECRETS comes with a Homemade Canine Supplement book for homemade supps that will complete your dogs nutritional needs
